From Set Down to Champion: Oluwaseun Ogunsakin and the Power of Tennis Mindset Training

Oluwaseun Ogunsakin delivered a landmark performance at the ITF Africa Regional Championship, becoming one of the first Nigerians in recent years to win the title. His run through the early rounds was relatively smooth, but the real test began in the quarterfinals and that’s where his tournament truly took shape.

From that point on, every match became a battle.

In the quarterfinal, Seun recovered from a slow start to defeat Eyad Reda Ezzat Mohamed Sherif 4-6, 6-1, 6-0. In the semifinal, he came back again to beat Egypt’s Marwan Ehab 2-6, 7-5, 7-5. The final followed the same pattern, as he overcame Ntungamili Raguin of Botswana 1-6, 7-6, 6-3.

Across all three matches, Seun lost the first set but won each time.

Speaking after the final, he pointed to a shift in mindset as the key factor:

“At first, I was having a tough time… I was struggling in the first set. Then I started having positive thoughts. I told myself it was very possible to come back and win… and I refused to give up no matter the conditions.”

That approach reflects a core principle in tennis: confidence is often built during difficult moments, not before them. Rather than forcing his game early, Seun stayed composed, adjusted, and trusted his ability to work his way back into matches a mindset shaped through the training environment at Aurum Tennis Academy.

Rather than forcing his game early, Seun stayed composed, adjusted, and trusted his ability to work his way back into matches. He carried that form into the following week’s J300 event, defeating Raguin again in the opening round before exiting in the second round to Tito Chaves.

Beyond the result, the tournament highlights an important takeaway for players finding your best self on court often comes down to how you respond under pressure.

Seun’s performance showed that belief, when maintained consistently, can turn difficult positions into winning ones. In moments where results are not going your way, confidence in your preparation and your ability becomes essential. Matches will present setbacks, but how a player responds mentally often determines the outcome just as much as technical skill. Staying composed, trusting your training, and maintaining self-belief allows you to reset, adapt, and compete effectively even when circumstances are unfavorable.

Confidence is not the absence of difficulty, it is the decision to continue believing in your capacity despite it. When you hold onto that mindset, pressure becomes an opportunity rather than a limitation, and challenges become situations you can work through rather than reasons to doubt yourself.

Be like Seun and achieve your dreams in tennis or whatever field you find yourself in.
