Commencing his campaign with a formidable challenge against a crafty Mexican clay court specialist, David's resolute willpower overcame the unfamiliarity of the surface, securing a triumphant three-set victory: 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-3. This early success set an impressive precedent for subsequent triumphs.
Confronting another Mexican clay court specialist in subsequent matches, David exhibited a more robust game, securing a commanding 6-2, 6-2 victory, thereby advancing to the quarterfinals. The quarterfinal encounter proved pivotal, as David, seeded #4, demonstrated unwavering courage against the highest ranked Mexican player in the tournament, Andres Delgadillo, securing victory in three sets: 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-2—an outcome that marked a notable upset.
