Tennis Legend Morolake Olateru-Olagbegi Talks Growth and Training at Aurum Academy Abuja

Aurum Tennis Academy had the honour of hosting Morolake Olateru Olagbegi, one of Nigeria’s most distinguished former tennis professionals and coaches, following an invitation from the Chairman of the Aurum Tennis Foundation. Widely regarded for her contribution to the growth of Nigerian tennis and her commitment to mentoring young athletes, Morolake’s visit provided valuable guidance and inspiration for the Academy’s players and staff.

During her visit, Morolake spoke about the critical role of tennis academies in developing world-class players. She explained that a structured environment offers stability, nurtures comradery, reduces the strain of constant travel and tournament logistics, and allows athletes to concentrate fully on technical and personal growth. She was pleasantly impressed by the Academy and quality of the Aurum program, commending the coaches for their dedication and the professionalism evident across all levels of training. She urged them to continue building on their success and to keep challenging the players to achieve excellence.

Speaking directly to the athletes, Morolake underlined the importance of discipline and self-motivation, particularly for female players.

“Practice is key,” she said. “But what truly defines you is how you train when no one is watching. Play, plan, and reflect on your game but always remember to enjoy it and have fun.”

She also highlighted the need to balance sport with education, encouraging the players to take time to plan their college pathways and to see academics as an essential part of long-term success as its all about managing their time.
